Former intelligence officials sue to end pre-publication review of writings


The American Civil Liberties Union and Columbia University’s Knight First Amendment Institute sued three U.S. intelligence chiefs and the acting defense secretary arguing that “the reviews as currently practiced breach the Constitution’s First Amendment prohibition on government abridgment of freedom of speech.”

The American Civil Liberties Union and Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University filed a lawsuit on Tuesday alleging the “pre-publication review amounts to a “far-reaching system of prior restraint,” and that the government’s arbitrary and sometimes confounding censorship decisions are unconstitutional under the First Amendment.”
